Calling all colorists and coloring book enthusiasts! We are starting a coloring book club that meets once a month. Bring your coloring book and pencils and spend time coloring with others. We will share information about artists and new books, and we will show you new techniques each meeting. If you are new to coloring, coloring pages will be provided and you can borrow pencils and tools that we have here. We will meet the first Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7:00p. It's for 16+ and there is no fee. Feel free to bring a sack dinner, if you'd like.
The Cleveland Clinic released an article on the benefits of adult coloring last year—
What does adult coloring do to relax people?
Dr. Bea, clinical psychologist, cites three reasons adult coloring can be calming:
1) Attention flows away from ourselves. A simple act, such as coloring, takes your attention away from yourself (and those things that are stressing you out!) and onto the present-moment event. “In this way, it is very much like a meditative exercise,” Dr. Bea says.
2) It relaxes the brain. When thoughts are focused on this simple activity, your brain tends to relax. “You’re not disturbed by your own thoughts and appraisals,” he says. “The difficulties of life evaporate from your awareness, and both your body and your brain may find this rewarding.”
3) Low stakes make it pleasurable. Go ahead: color outside the lines! The outcome of coloring isn’t predictable or prescriptive. It can be as neat — or as messy — as you choose, and this is one of its relaxing perks. “It is hard to screw up coloring, and, even if you do, there is no real consequence. Adult coloring can be a wonderful escape, rather than a demanding test of our capacities,” he adds.
A non-instructional open group working from a live model. Easels available but bring your favorite supplies (others will be working with charcoal, graphite, watercolor, oils...if working with solvents, do use odorless). Sessions meet every Thursday morning, 9:00am-noon. Contact the Guild office (murrayartguild@gmail.com) to be added to the group email to receive schedule changes and model schedule. Fee: $10/week. Due to COVID-19 regulations, class size is limited to 4 artists. Masks of artists & the model is required. Sign up is on a monthly basis. If class is full, please contact the MAG office to be placed on a wait list.
Murray Ukulele Club
Open to all— bring an instrument
Meets last Sundays @ 2pm
An open studio is intended to foster creativity and encourage experimentation in an atmosphere of cultural exchange, conversation, encouragement, and freedom of expression.
Open to everyone interested in sharing creative time with other makers. Whether working with fiber, paper, paint or pencils, needles or not, we’re all thinking about color and pattern and texture. This is an opportunity to share information and resources, creative struggles and triumphs; be inspired, or inspiring!
