"Whimsical Sculpture " - Kenneth E Tyler       August 1 - 29
The artist, who lives in Wingo, Kentucky, has won several awards in area shows for his imaginative sculptures which look vaguely familiar and completely foreign at the same time. Tyler’s work could be considered “outsider art”: art that is created outside of the main stream. Tyler who has been making his whimsical art for two years said he picked up clay one day “and started making stuff.” While clay is the primary material for most of his pieces, Tyler includes many found objects in his work. “I’ll pick up anything, if it looks good I’ll use it.”

Tyler uses images from everyday (animals, nature and figures) but is also influenced by mythology and movies. He stated that ideas just come from the top of his head and that he often works and watches movies simultaneously.

Many pieces suggest stories or events. The brightly painted sculptures are jewel like with pearlescent and metallic surfaces. The pieces are busy with patterns and details that draw the viewer into the whimsical world of Kenneth Earl Tyler’s art.

DRAW PAINT SLEEP REPEAT: Paintings in oil by Rick Mjos

a short chronology:
In 1976, after attending North Hennepin State Junior College, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, the University of Minnesota and a full-ride all expenses paid 3 year World tour with the US Army Rick moved to Murray. In 1980 Rick received a BFA from Murray State University.

Since that time Rick has been involved in various endeavors from cutting tobacco and landscaping to free-lancing illustration and Artwork for hire.  The past twenty years have found Mjos working as a letter carrier for the US Postal service, and as a result the pursuit of art was put on hold.  Now, Mjos says he’s back to painting “and maybe just a little more mature (in years, anyway).”

Rick is a member of the Murray Art Guild where he regularly attends life drawing sessions. The Murray Art Guild, a community visual arts group, is located at 500 North 4th Street and is open to the community Tuesday through Saturday 10am – 3pm. The Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet, provides operational support funding for the Murray Art Guild with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment of the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

For additional information on the Guild, or to purchase a painting, contact MAG at murrayartguild.org or 753-4059.
